"Matka," also referred to as "Kalyan Matka," is a form of lottery or betting that originated in India during the 1950s. It was originally based on betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange to the Bombay Cotton Exchange via teleprinters. However, after the New York Cotton Exchange halted the practice in 1961, punters/gamblers found alternative ways to keep the betting alive.
