An opioid painkiller called codeine is used to treat moderately to severely painful conditions. It is also used to lessen coughing, usually in conjunction with other drugs. Codeine can be found as an ingredient alone, in certain cough and cold remedies, or combined with acetaminophen or aspirin.
Codeine is comparable to morphine and hydrocodone in that it is a mild narcotic painkiller and cough suppressant. The body changes a tiny quantity of codeine that is consumed into morphine. Codeine lessens discomfort by increasing one's tolerance to pain. Codeine reduces pain but also produces lethargy, respiratory depression, and sedation.
