After my first flight of the day on Alaska (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/alaska-airlines-horizon-air-richmond#hrid:o-h56miugT1vP5xd4o1gpw) I had low expectations, which is probably why I'm giving 3 stars. If I had to compare to something like Cathay (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/cathay-pacific-airways-richmond#hrid:0JTqnEEhZbTdRDkYAXqQ4A) it would probably be 2.5.
AA flies tiny little MD80 planes on so many of their domestic trips in the States, including my flight from Seattle to Chicago. The flight was packed and the flight attendants were pretty grumpy during boarding.
But once the flight got off the ground the flight attendants seemed to relax and provided a decent service.
The first class seat was pretty cramped with the person in front of you reclining and having it hit your laptop. (And yes, I had my laptop out to watch a movie because AA doesn't provide any on board entertainment at all on these planes!)
Breakfast was served - and was actually pretty decent. It basically served as my lunch since it was already almost lunch time in Chicago. The omelet was nicely spiced with a bit of chili - a nice surprise for airline food which is usually pretty bland. It came with some decent side beans and potatoes. There was also a fresh fruit plate that was actually fresh and tasty (several types of melon, berries, and pineapple), and fresh baked biscuits. Not terrible, and better than I expected.
Drinks were regularly refilled throughout the flight.
The one thing that is really wonderful about AA, which also brings it up to 3 stars is its frequent flier program. I think it is the best program out there with all sorts of partners, bonus miles, and fairly easy to redeem miles for international travel on carriers like Cathay, Qantas, JAL, and BA.
The little relatively unknown secret with the program is that after you accumulate 1 million miles (not just airline miles - from any partners, etc.) you get lifetime Gold elite status. After 2 million miles you get lifetime Platinum elite status. The platinum elite gives you 100% mileage bonus, regular upgrades, lounge access at all of their major partner lounges, etc. It is a nice perk to get the lifetime so that even in years without much travel on them you still get some nice things when you do fly.
So my big trick is try to fly Cathay, BA, and Qantas and rack up the miles in the AA program!"
