Before focusing on the cargo light, however, it is worth noting that the 1999 GMC Sierra headlight system suffers from similar age-related dimness. The factory composite headlights rely on halogen bulbs and polycarbonate lenses that are now over 25 years old. Over time, UV exposure oxidizes the lenses, turning them hazy and yellow, which can reduce light output by 50 percent or more. Many owners also overlook the headlight housings themselves—if the reflective coating inside has deteriorated, even new bulbs will struggle to project a useful beam. Upgrading the cargo light to LED is a fantastic start, but do not stop there. Consider restoring or replacing your headlight lenses and switching to high-quality LED or enhanced halogen headlight bulbs.
