Millions of years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, other bizarre organisms lived in ancient water masses across much of the world. One group of animals among those organisms was the eurypterids, which were referred to as "sea scorpions." Although the extinct arthropods lived several hundred million years ago, their story did not stop there. In essence, some eurypterids' existence was immortalized by nature through fossilization in rocks, forming the fossil eurypterid.
