The A1 category is the entry door into motorcycling for a lot of UK riders. You’re allowed to ride motorcycles with an engine size up to 125cc, power output no more than 11kW, plus a power-to-weight ratio that stays at or below 0.1kW/kg. You need to be at least 17 years old to apply, that part is non-negotiable. This is different from the AM moped licence, because with A1 you get access to a bit more speed, and more capable bikes, which is why it’s such a popular choice for teens and young adults who want more than a scooter, but still aren’t ready for a full-size machine. Also, it can be a solid stepping stone if you plan to move up to an A2 or a full A licence later. Keep copies of your booking confirmations and test results too. Sometimes they get asked for later, especially if you’re also sorting other identity-related paperwork like UK ID as part of settling into life in the UK.
