Long-Term Opioid Therapy with Oxycodone: Benefits and Risks

Long-term opioid therapy generally refers to opioid treatment extending beyond the period normally expected for acute pain and may be considered in some patients with persistent pain. 60 mg Oxycodone pill may be used when pain is severe, other treatments have been ineffective or are inappropriate, and the expected benefits of opioid treatment outweigh its risks.

The decision to continue Oxycodone should be individualized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that nonopioid and nonpharmacological treatments generally be preferred for subacute and chronic pain. Opioid therapy may nevertheless be appropriate in selected clinical situations when meaningful improvement in pain and function is expected.
