A radiation dosimeter is a device that determines how much ionising radiation has been absorbed. It is worn by the person being monitored and maintains track of the radiation dose received when used as a personal dosimeter. Modern electronic personal dosimeters can display cumulative dose and current dose rate in real time, as well as offer an audible warning if a specified dose rate or cumulative dose is exceeded. Nuclear power stations are required to use dosimeters. Other dosimeters, such as thermoluminescent or film types, must be processed after use to display the total dose received, thus cannot provide a real-time indication of exposure while being worn.
