Everything you need to know ahead of U F C 276.Undefeated Australian boxer Jai Opetaia is confident that he has the skills to take out IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis in their title bout tomorrow night on the Gold Coast. “I believe I can match it with him when it matters, definitely,” Opetaia told reporters after the weigh-in. “Obviously he’s had some great fighters and he’s had a great legacy. “But I truly believe his legacy ends here and mine starts.” Watch U F C 276 battle for the IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Titles. Saturday 2 July from 7PM AEST LIVE with Main Event on Kayo Sports & Foxtel. ORDER NOW > The Queensland southpaw, who was the youngest to ever represent his country in boxing at an Olympic Games, thinks the difference between himself and the previous challengers vanquished by Briedis is his fighting style. “He definitely hasn’t fought a boxer like myself, I believe,” Opetaia told Nine’s WWOS.“He’s fought some great fighters, but he’s been at the top because he’s been the only cruiserweight with some decent movement and a bit of hand movement. All the other ones are just power punchers. “He got out-boxed by (Oleksander) Usyk (in his only professional loss), but all the other ones were heavy hitters, they were power punchers. “But that’s not our game plan. We play the game, it’s a chess match in there.”In the co-main event, fan favourite Issac Hardman - who is looking to bounce back following his first career loss at the hands of Michael Zerafa in April - will face off against fellow middleweight Beau Hartas in what is sure to be an interesting battle. Both fighters have been amicable in the build up to the fight, however, have promised that any friendliness between the two will be put on hold once they step into the ring.“Just here to punch each other’s head in and have a few cold ones after,” Hartas said after his weigh-in. “He beat me to the punch, I was going to bring a VB for us to share. He’s got the (VB) budgy smugglers out. Tomorrow we’ll share one (after the fight),” Hardman agreed. The rest of the card will feature six intriguing bouts, including AFLW superstar Taylah Robertson’s return to boxing. WHEN DOES IT START The first fight commences at 6pm, with the pay-per-view card set to begin at 7pm. The main event title bout between IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis and Aussie challenger Jai Opetaia is expected to start at or around 10.30pm. Defending champion Mairis Briedis, 37, came in at 199.1 pounds for what will be the second defense of the titles he won by outpointing Yuniel Dorticos in September 2020. The Latvian boxer puncher is coming off a third-round stoppage of Artur Mann last October. “This is a special fight in Australia – it’s most important,” Briedis (28-1, 20 KOs) said after making weight. “We’ll see [what happens] tomorrow because it’s a secret.” The Australian challenger, Opetaia, was comfortably inside the division limit at 198.4 pounds. He’s never mixed at this level, but he’s an unbeaten power-puncher with a 21-0 (17 KOs) record and he’s a lefty. The former Olympian appears extremely confident of victory and has an entire country in his corner. “We’ve done all the hard work,” said Opetaia, who just turned 27 years old. “We’ve been training, I’ve changed my whole lifestyle for this fight, so I’m feeling good. “One more sleep and we get it done.”Aussie birthday boy ‘ready for war’ in world title bout with ‘Crocodile Dundee’ world champ. After a frustrating wait, rising Australian star Jai Opetaia and Latvian world champ Mairis Briedis will finally get in the ring together on Saturday night. And promoter Dean Lonergan declared at Thursday’s press conference that fight will be: “one of the all-time great fights we see here in Australia, with two guys who don’t take a backwards step. I think it’ll be an all-time war. I think you’re going to see a lot of blood, a lot of gore. And you’re going to see some amazing boxing skills … it’ll be something special.” Opetaia, 27 years old today, was originally scheduled to face Briedis — who holds the IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight world titles — in April before the Latvian tested positive to Covid. Another date was set for May, but a rib injury and another bout of surgery for Briedis forced another delay. But the long-awaited bout is finally here and it’s a huge opportunity for Opetaia (21-0, 17KO), who is rated a $2.70 outsider against Briedis (28-1, 20KO), whose only professional career loss came against current world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Opetaia declared: “I’ve waited a long time for this opportunity. Man, I can’t wait! I feel ready. I know he’s a great fighter, but I’m a new generation of great coming through. All he’s done, that’s all in the past now. It’s my time.” He continued: “I know this is a big step up from my past competition. My last fights I blew them out of the water... I was levels above...I’m ready to become a world champion”And he predicts it will be a vicious, tough battle, saying: “I’m ready for those deep waters. I’m ready to dig deep... I know this is going to be a war and I’m ready for it.”“I think this is going to be an absolute war,” promoter Dean Lonergan declared at the press conference. “Jai is incredibly hungry. It has been feeding him for the last six months.” Dean Lonergan declared Opetaia the “toughest boxer in Australia,” if not the toughest sportsman in Australia, given the brutal run of injuries he has had to overcome. “It’s as big a test as he can possibly have,” he added. “He’s hungry enough to do it, he’s got the skill-set to do it.”“I’ve done a few fights with Don King, but that was one hell of a speech there,” Briedis’ world-renowned promoter Kalle Sauerland joked in reply. “I feel like we can already pack up, leave the belt, and go home.” READ MORE BRIEDIS: He’s known for trolling Jake Paul but is ‘top 15’ in all of boxing. The colourful champ in Aussie’s way ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD: The ‘genetic advantage’ behind Aussie Olympian’s rise to world title shot ‘DOESN’T GET ANY BIGGER’: How Aussie underdog can shock the world against ‘complete’ champ He said 37-year-old Briedis had “done it the hard way,” coming from the small country of Latvia to become a world champion. “We’re talking about a guy with pedigree. When we talk about pedigree, this is a three-time world champion … And I can assure you, the belly is very empty and he’s still raring to go.” “He’s here to take care of business then we go off and unify (the belts) again,” he added, declaring Opetaia’s move too big of a step up in class, and one destined to fail. “I totally agree with Dean on one thing – this will not go the 12 rounds.”Briedis arrived at the press conference wearing a hat that looked straight out of the Crocodile Dundee film, which was apparently a nod to the real-life inspiration for Paul Hogan’s iconic Mick Dundee character. Briedis’ manager Raimonds Zeps said: “the hat, it’s not bulls**t,” referencing the story of Latvian-born soldier Arvid Blumenthal, who emigrated to Australia and became an opal miner then – according to urban legend – hunted up to 40,000 crocodiles to earn the nickname 'Crocodile Harry'. Asked about Opetaia’s prediction of a ‘war’, Briedis replied softly: “war is too loud.” “I understand what they mean about war. I don’t know how I feel in the ring, how he feels in the ring. As Mike Tyson said, ‘All the plans change after one punch to the head.’” But, he said: “I hope we show all the world - and all the world speak about this fight and enjoy this fight.” “This is Jai’s breakthrough fight,” Lonergan said yesterday. “Every fighter has one fight that puts them into the consciousness of boxing fans, and this is it for Jai.” Opetaia’s manager since 2017, Michael Francis, labelled it “will no doubt be the biggest card of the year.” “He’s the real deal … you’re going to see a new champion come Saturday night.”Notorious Aussie trash-talker Issac Hardman (12-1, 10KOs) went against his trademark style when he refused to denigrate his rival in the co-main event, Beau Hartas. Hardman said: “I can’t actually fault Beau – I had a look at him, there’s not much on him. I searched Facebook, I saw him punching down six VBs in 60 seconds in 2012. He’s got a sick mullet back then, now he’s got a ratty (rats-tail haircut). “I can’t knock this block – I will Saturday, unfortunately. But I’m sure I will share a few VBs after too.” Beau Hartas (6-1, 4KOs) promised: “I can box, I can bang, I’ve got pretty good feet, pretty smart … very confident of getting the win here. I’ve trained my arse off for this.”
