Delta Airlines is a major airline headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It operates an extensive domestic and international network. The airline was formed on August 25, 1914, by Delta Air Lines, Inc. and opened its first route from Atlanta to Savannah on May 1, 1915. Delta's original purpose was to provide air transportation for the cotton crop and other agricultural products between the Deep South and northern markets. When the Civil War broke out, the airline turned its attention to transporting troops and supplies.
