Bile acids are biologically important small molecules that the liver produces bile acids and they are found predominantly in the bile of mammals and other vertebrates. About 80% of the organic compounds in bile are bile acids and the remainder is made up of phospholipids and cholesterol. Bile acids are conjugated with taurine or glycine residues to give anions called bile salts. Once secreted into the lumen of the intestine, bile salts are modified by gut bacteria.
