In Canada, I find that most young people prefer to use Snapchat. In addition to some of its fun features like animated photo lenses, there is a strong privacy element. You have to approve a friend before they can send you a message, and you get to choose which friends can see your location. You can delete a message before or after it is seen. Most messages and photos are deleted automatically after being viewed (or after 24 hours with a special setting).
